Bismack Biyombo NBA Draft Profile

bismack biyomboBismack Biyombo has played about 14 games of serious basketball in his entire life.  And I think he is the second best player in the 2011 NBA draft.  I think he is a raw prospect who looks a lot like Kevin Garnett did prior to the 1995 NBA draft.

So what does an 18 year old player, who has not spent much time on the court do to warrant a lottery selection?  What skills does an 18 year old player possess that projects him as a top 3 pick?  Off the charts length, athleticism, and an ability to play some serious interior defense.

There are lots of raw and athletic players who cannot play basketball.  But Biyombo can do something at the 5 position that most NBA franchises lack.  He can block a seriously high volume of shots from the post.  He can shut down the dribble drive.  He can change an opponents game plan.  Players like Biyombo do not come along very often.  And when they do, they get drafted pretty high in the NBA draft.

NBA Ready Skills:

  • Interior defense
  • Length and athleticism
  • Rebounding
  • Aggressiveness

Weaknesses:

  • Offense
  • Experience

NBA Comparison:

  • Kevin Garnett / Nene

Although Bismack has only played in a few games for Fuenlabrada, he has put up some really impressive per 40 numbers.  In just 17mpg, Biyambo averages 6.3 points, 5 rebounds, and a shocking 2.3 blocks.  Per 40, that’s 15/12/5.

The game that most NBA execs will be watching is the 2011 Nike Hoop Summit where he recorded a triple double, 12 pts, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks.  Opposing players could not get a shot off in the paint.

Biyombo’s glaring weakness is his offense.  He is not a good jump shooter and only shoots about 50% from the free throw line.  Biyombo gets all of his points in the paint and scores a high percentage of his points off of dunks.  This style of play leads to high efficiency and lots of FTA.  Biyombo can get his own shot off in the paint, can clean up rebounds, and is great at putting the ball back into the bucket off misses.

Biyombo has an NBA body.  He is just 6’9” but has a 7’7” wingspan.  His standing reach is 9’4”, which is about the same as most 6’11” to 7′ NBA centers.  NBA teams rarely get a chance to draft an athletic NBA center who plays defense.  Bismack Biyambo will intrigue a team enough to be drafted in the top 5 and perhaps a team like the Timberwolves will see the next Kevin Garnett and draft Bismack 2nd overall.  I would.
